Imran Khan's capture would cause extreme public kickback, says
President Alvi
President Dr. Arif Alvi warned on Thursday that the
arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Imran Khan will trigger a
strong response from the populace.
The former premier may have been arrested,
according to sources, which prompted throngs of PTI employees to arrive at his
home to defend him. The president's response follows such reports.
In a statement to the media, President Alvi warned
that the situation would get worse if Imran was detained, and that it was best
to avoid doing so because of the ensuing strong public outcry. The
"minus-one formula," according to Alvi, had never been successful in
Pakistan.
The president claimed that the PTI had not brought
up the detention of party leader Fawad Chaudhry with him, and he added that the
appropriate authorities had to be ashamed of the way Fawad was restrained.
