A single dose of the antibiotic azithromycin can significantly lower the risk of life-threatening sepsis infections and fatalities after vaginal deliveries, according to a ground-breaking multinational study conducted by a UVA Health scientist and his team.

A single dose of the antibiotic azithromycin can help shield mothers against risky sepsis infections and passing away during vaginal delivery, according to a significant new multinational study. A UVA Health researcher and his associates carried out the study, which was written up in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Women giving birth via caesarean section have already been found to benefit from azithromycin, often known as Z-Pak. However, the most recent research shows that the common antibiotic lowers mortality for vaginal delivery mothers and their risk of sepsis, a potentially fatal full-body infection.
