Five Things You Need to Know about Writing Articles

If you’re thinking about writing an article, the first step is to determine what your topic will be. An article doesn’t need to be a comprehensive list of everything related to that topic or subject. That being said, if someone could benefit from it, don’t hesitate to write about it. But don’t expect perfection. Write without editing and proofread each piece for spelling and grammar errors. Also consider researching other articles and asking them to check for plagiarism. Remember to include all relevant information in your writing. Don’t just assume the reader knows your content. Make sure your audience understands the problem you’re trying to solve. After all, this isn't a newspaper; readers won’t have the time to read all of your paragraphs. Instead, provide value by giving context and examples where possible. This goes for both written and website content. Keep your text short. The average person reads only 13 words per page, so anything more than 10 should suffice. Keep it simple or even one sentence long at minimum. This includes long introductions and endnotes with longer points and subheadings. For example, instead of reading “5 things we should know about dog bites,” try this excerpt: "Dogs do not bite because they are stupid or aggressive; dogs bite because they think they can get away with it."

If you're planning on creating an online article for a publication, don't forget to keep the following sections in mind:

1) Title, Subtitle & H2

The title needs something catchy and stands out. A great title should include keywords so search engines like Google find it easier to rank. Include keywords in the beginning and middle of your title. Also make sure there are no spaces in between the words, including periods. Finally, make sure the word count is enough to tell someone who's browsing the site whether or not they were able to read your entire article. Some sites limit titles beyond 50 characters; others recommend up to 150 characters. Many people use WordPress, but some prefer Microsoft Word or another editor. Be consistent! Use different words and don’t repeat any key phrases throughout. Your headlines are also critical for generating traffic to your web page. They should be memorable. Examples include: “7 reasons why you should brush your teeth twice daily”, “Tips for making homemade vegan bread”, “10 tips to boost your self-confidence”. Try using multiple headings for better SEO.

The subtitle plays a similar role as the title. It is usually shorter than the title, yet it must contain a keyword or phrase related to the main idea of your post, which often involves several ideas. Think of your introduction as a lead paragraph before you dive into a discussion of your full article. Then use strong descriptive language to describe your post’s purpose. Include specific keywords that relate to your article, such as: “Top 4 Tips to Improve Self-Confidence”.

The H2 is the third section of most internet pages. In most cases, this takes only six or seven words. When introducing a new topic, use one or two major terms until you run out of appropriate detail. Keep it concise and easy to understand for anyone who visits your site. For example, avoid saying: “People will say anything to attract attention”. On the same note, don’t mention any negative details in your H2 unless your primary focus in the body of your post is your solution to their problem. These details are important to help form trust with the reader. Again, aim for brevity so the reader will remember you are serious about solving the problem. Once you decide on a single title for each H2, create one for every article. As a result, the reader will quickly recognize which ones are about the same topic. Other topics may require a slightly different approach.

2) Research

Always begin with research. Find sources that address your central question and add the necessary supporting evidence. While it’s important to consult other experts, always cite sources within your own text. This helps establish the credibility of your claims. Of course, you might want to conduct further research after drafting an article. Just make sure you have access. Otherwise, the article could fall flat if you don’t include references. One good way to ensure credible sources is through searching the Internet yourself (searching google scholar). Another option is to ask relatives, friends, colleagues, or trusted contacts to point your writer in the right direction.

3) Keywords

Keywords are terms people use when seeking solutions to problems or finding answers to questions. Whether you’re looking at a blog post, online advertisement, magazine, or website content, keywords are important. Most social media users use keywords to locate certain websites. Even though some websites allow you to type the URL of the page, other popular search engines prefer you to enter a unique combination of letters and numbers (URL), including: http://www.abc.com.au/abc
