Lightning Strikes Make a Weird Type of Gem Seldom Found in Nature

A unusual crystal arrangement was left behind by the ferocious electrical fingers that struck a Nebraskan sand dune.

Scientists have discovered a quasicrystal, a previously thought-impossible arrangement of matter, inside a chunk of fulgurite, or "fossilised lightning," which is a mineral formed by a strong electrical current flowing through sand and fusing it.

This finding opens up new possibilities for the laboratory production of quasicrystals by indicating that they can arise via previously unidentified paths.

In their work, a group of researchers lead by geologist Luca Bindi from the University of Florence in Italy explore a different potential nature-inspired method for producing quasicrystals: electrical discharge.
