Pakistan Blocks Wikipedia Over "Profane Substance". We Know this
On Saturday, Pakistan blocked Wikipedia over what it deemed to be “blasphemous content” [1], a highly sensitive issue in the Muslim-majority nation. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had given the website until late Friday to comply with its orders, without elaborating on the content in question.
Wikipedia is a free web-based reference book, made and altered by volunteers all over the planet and facilitated by the Wikimedia Establishment.
The PTA representative expressed that Wikipedia was drawn nearer for obstructing/expulsion of the expressed substance by giving a notification.
A chance for a conference was likewise given; be that as it may, the stage neither consented by eliminating the godless substance nor showed up before the power.
The PTA spokesperson said that the website was blocked due to non-compliance [2]. This comes after Pakistan threatened to blacklist Wikipedia over “sacrilegious content” [3], but the site has yet to comply with the order and has not appeared before the Authority.
Freedom of speech advocates have long criticised the increasing censorship and control of Pakistan’s internet and printed and electronic media [2].
YouTube, a popular video-sharing platform, has also been blocked in the past due to content deemed blasphemous [2], and it was blocked again in 2020 after regulators asked YouTube to block all videos they considered “objectionable” [2]. The wildly popular video-sharing app TikTok has also been blocked several times over “indecent” and “immoral” content [2].
