Rishi Sunak under tension from backbench MPs to proclaim China a 'danger' - UK governmental issues live
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is facing pressure from backbench MPs to label China a “threat” as part of the UK government’s integrated review of global security. This is in line with the stance of his predecessor, Liz Truss, who officially designated China “the most serious long-term threat to our values and way of life” .
[1]Sunak has hinted that he will abandon plans to declare China a “threat” to national security, instead opting to soften his language on Beijing and replace wishful thinking with “robust pragmatism” in Britain’s dealings with China.
[2] However, some senior MPs have suggested redesignating China’s status would be little more than a PR stunt.
[3]Meanwhile, the University and College Union has confirmed that it is reballoting members in order to continue the current strike action over pay, pensions, job security and working conditions.
